A DEXA body composition analysis scan, also known as dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, is considered the “gold standard” method for assessing body composition and is more precise than other methods. This FDA-approved scan uses X-ray technology combined with specialized software to provide an in-depth analysis of your fat tissue, lean mass, and bone density. It gives you a detailed snapshot of how your body weight is distributed between fat and lean tissue.

Understanding your body composition is important if you are trying to lose fat, gain muscle, or achieve both goals. Follow-up scans may be recommended to review your progress and determine if you are meeting your weight loss or muscle mass objectives.

On the day of your scan, please wear loose and comfortable clothing, and avoid garments with metal zippers, belts, or buttons. You will need to remove items such as keys, wallets, jewelry, dental appliances, and eyeglasses before the scan.

During the scan, you will lie flat on your back on an X-ray table. A photon generator will pass slowly beneath you, while an X-ray detection camera will move above the table in parallel with the photon generator. Together, they will project images of your entire body from head to toe onto a computer screen. It is essential to stay very still and refrain from talking during the scan, which takes about 15 minutes to complete.
